Here at vInspired we're dedicated to our cause - to make young people amazing! Whether that's at work, play or even a party!
Effective business networking is bringing people together who, through trust and relationship building, become walking, talking advocates for one another.
Here are five quick tips to get you started:
1) Follow up on new meetings
Everyone you meet is a part of your network, so when you meet someone new it is really important that you stay in touch! Send everyone you meet a Linkedin friend request. Also, GET LINKEDIN! So many employers are recruiting from LinkedIn so make sure you make the most out of this.
2) Carry a mini book to write down names of possible important contacts
You can also go old school if you aren’t connected to your smartphone by the hip. Don’t miss out on an important contact link because you have forgotten their name, write it down with a little note about them.
3) Attend events/talks/conferences
It can seem hard to find events where likeminded career driven people gather, but there is hope out there! Use sites like Meetup or Eventbrite for opportunities to network with people that are actually involved in the career you are interested in. Here are a few tips to help you if you do attend one:
- Research the speakers and organisers so you have something to talk about
- Have a story to tell not a pitch when introducing yourself
- Read and be up-to-date with current affairs
4) Read and comment on blogs or write your own
A great way to get used to speaking to academics or influential people in your sector is to find and start discussions on relevant blogs. If you can’t find anything you are passionate about, why not start your own? This could be a great way for a potential employer or client to see your expertise. 5) Share contacts
I’m sure you’ve been told that sharing is caring. If you help out a friend or colleague, they are more likely to help you out. Share contacts that might be useful to someone else, always volunteer to help colleagues and friends
The most important tip is to be genuine and confident when trying to build your connections. Remember volunteering opportunities can be a great place to meet new contacts! You can of course apply for opportunities on our site at any time - these will appear on your profile when the organiser accepts you, then you can add hours against those too. Simple! Once you've recorded enough hours of volunteering you can go ahead and apply for an award.
